A docent is a knowledgeable guide who leads visitors throughout Morikami, providing historical background about the museum and gardens, as well as answering questions about the museum and delivering commentary on the exhibitions and gardens.
Docents work as a team and learn through self-study and mentoring about Japanese culture and museum exhibits from Morikami staff. Attendance at monthly meetings as well as the ability to stand for long periods and walk the gardens are required.
We are actively seeking new docent educators for our year-round docent volunteer program. (Seasonal residents are welcome.)
Our mission is to engage a diverse audience by presenting Japanese cultural experiences that educate & inspire. Docents are the key to this endeavor as they share their knowledge and love of Japanese culture and art with others and enhance the museum experience for our visitors.
The satisfaction that you have shared your knowledge and love of Japanese culture and art with others and have enhanced the museum experience of our visitors.
Docents complete approximately 45 hours of training that consists of education sessions about our exhibitions and gardens (in person and online), and all docents-in-training shadow current docents during their weekly tours. Docents meet once a month on Mondays for training sessions.
Becoming a Morikami “certified” Docent takes six (6) months to a year depending on your interest and time to learn the material. Training begins on the job right away and you can do self-study with materials we provide, while also working with a chosen docent mentor, and a team of docents. Periodically there are mandatory gallery tours, and docents are strongly encouraged to attend and volunteer at lectures and other educational programming presented by the Morikami to enrich their learning experience.
